Curly-hair does care!

After a bit of a crazy week of the We Steal Flyers tour mobiles trouble and having to cancel some shows, I ended up being around the house over the weekend and into the next week a lot more than expected. I was missing the music that had been planned and on a lazy Tuesday night last week I ended up on the couch with the Curly one and my lovely new Sigma guitar.

There is pretty much guitars everywhere in our little humble home and they pretty much get picked up all day and played around with for a little then put down again. I can be in the kitchen, studio or sitting on the couch and noodling away while the tea is being cooked, the missus is creating her little crafty things at the table or when a movie is on.

So this Tuesday I was sitting playing around on the couch while Curly sat checking her phone and having a bit chin-wag with a glass of wine and after a bit noodle on the guitar we decided to try out a few songs while we chilled together. I even managed to bring her round to the idea of maybe recording a video for YouTube of us together. I was quite surprised as when I first tried to get her to record a little vocal in the studio, without video, I pretty much had to push the record button and then leave the building as quick as possible and come back when she was done! Hahahha. She is a shy little thing when it comes to her singing so this was quite a step.

Sound Check for Declan & Ali Donnelly’s Wedding

Curly does perform live though in a band, on her own with the piano and with me too. She sings for a worship band performing at events and festivals usually focused towards Youth Ministry. The band also performs around monthly at the lovely St. Marys Church in the centre of Newcastle for Y.M.T at their regular ‘Source’ events. She also performs at weddings and other Church related events and I managed to perform alongside her earlier this year during the service of ‘Declan & Ali Donnelly’s’ wedding (Ant & Dec) and as you can imagine it was quite a thing to be part of! We have a few wedding services to perform throughout this year together too. This was just to give you a little history on the little Curly one and what she does by the way!

I’ve been along to quite a few of the ‘Source’ events at St. Marys and when she sings with the band on stage, she really puts herself into an amazing place and her voice and emotion takes a whole life of its own and fills the huge chamber sounding church. The kids & adults absolutely love the events and its like being at an arena gig with the lights and production and all the effort that people put into it.

Anyhow, getting back on track we worked through a few songs together and we picked a song to get her singing on the camera for YouTube. Doby Gray’s – Drift Away was the song of choice and without a real practice, just a couple of quick run through, we managed to get sat in front of the camera in the kitchen and recorded it. We checked a little of the footage afterwards and I got all the crazy comments in my ear of “is that my face” , “I look weird” , “ohh I’m a bit off there” and “wow…shaggy you look amazing with that guitar you should buy loads more” hahahhahah. OK maybe not the last one… but I think she did amazing and looked fantabulous on the video as she always does!

The next morning I got the video up on YouTube and the response from all you lovely people out there was really amazing. All of the lovely comments & feedback from everyone has really boosted her confidence in singing in front of the camera and I’m sure she will be back with some more music as requested by so many of you. You did well, the shares and comments kept rolling in and it hit nearly 800 views in less than a week and we’re both over the moon!! Thank you!!

I wanna be a man, man-cub!

This last week was a little bit of car crash! Actually a car break-down… I was on tour and in Leicester only two gigs into the We Steal Flyers tour when… the car had a major break down. The gearbox on Derek & Mel’s Vauxhall Zafira was making some funny noises and we were advised to get home with it a.s.a.p. When we got on the motorway the gears started dropping out one by one and we ended up driving for six and a half hours in fourth & third gear back to the North East.

We made it home safely after a few near misses on the motorway with a brush left in the hard shoulder and Optimus Prime coming up too fast behind us and nearly wiping us out. We made it back safe though and the car is being taken care of. Unfortunately the rest of the tour had to be cancelled or re-scheduled.

This meant I had a weekend free of work & gigs. This doesn’t happen very often and only one day into it I was starting to feel like there was going to be a lot of time on my hands. I managed to get lots done online and finished up some work for the new album which is currently off for print.Excitingggggg timesss!!!

Friday night & Saturday morning, we made a plan! Curly & I wanted to see the new Jungle Book movie and what better excuse to take the little half pints out to the cinema. The little ones were excited, we were excited ….everyone was excited! We booked our tickets online for the Vue cinema at Cramlington and grabbed the kids and off we went. We were making a little detour to Home Bargains to get some treats and drinks as the food and drinks are completely and utterly, ridiculously priced in the cinema. I’m pretty sure if they were a little more reasonable more people would just get fed and watered in the cinema.

Ready to head in for ‘The Jungle Book’ at Vue Cramlington

We picked up our tickets from the machines and headed into our ‘Room 1’ with a bag full of lovely chompies and liquids. The movie was ten times better than I imagined and we were all huddled up with Macey on my knee after the tiger roared and she nearly jumped off her seat. The songs were great and totally re-worked into the new movie. After the show the little ones headed down to the front of the cinema and they pretty much danced for twenty minutes in front of the screen while the place was emptying out.

The day before I had posted on the Facebook page of my studio ‘Shagnut Studio Shack‘ saying I had received some new video lighting to test out and Vee Marie replied saying I should interview the girls about something.

On the way back from the movie we talked about the girls doing a review of the movie for YouTube and they were well up for a little interview and fun in front of the camera. The idea was born and already in motion. We got back, got everything set up and the two little ones were on their chairs and ready for the show. They were absolutely brilliant! When they are both together the magic just happens and it was all done in just one take with no planning, so I had no idea what was gonna come out of them.

Things are all under control with the car and tours. We Steal Flyers will be back on the road in no time and with our brand new album ‘Applecart‘ in our hands too. It looks like a few more videos of the ‘Shortpiles’ will be popping up as well so if you would like something reviewed why not give them a shout on the YouTube video.

Thanks for reading!

We can be Heroes! Just for one day!

Waking up yesterday morning (10th of January) was a bit of a strange one and a sad day for so many people around the world.

DSC_4086-01-01

I often have a lot of trouble sleeping and switching off from things and thoughts when I’m at home and I have never really been the kind of person to enjoy going to bed, sleeping and waking up,  although I feel like I am needing some kind of sleep a lot more than I have through out my whole life lately. If I lay on the couch with a movie on then you can pretty much guarantee I wont make it through it (even if I reeeeeeally want to watch the film) but sleeping when it is silent, is a lot of the time virtually impossible for me. If I do fall asleep whilst watching a movie,  I usually wake up once the film stops and quiet sneaks in.

Two nights ago I watched ‘American Ultra’ and I made it the whole way though it! Arrrrrr-yeshhhh!  It was a great film by the way. I then sat up and did a little work on the laptop and poked around Youtube a little afterwards. I headed upto bed around 3am and lay there for over half an hour staring at the ceiling, tossed and turned about the bed whilst my little noodle did silly things and I realised there wasn’t much chance I was gonna drop off to slumber land. I headed back downstairs, made a Batchelors minestrone cup-a-soup and decided to watch another movie to see if I could drop off and settle.But…. I watched that one all the way through too! I think I headed to bed somewhere around 5.30am and still didn’t feel tired at all, maybe just a little delirious! This can also be fun sometimes though  Muuuuahhahahha!

When I woke in the morning, some point heading towards 11.30am, I was kinda feeling like my head had been trampled on by a large heard of baby pink elephants. My normal morning routine, once I can eventually open my little sleepy peepers and focus is to grab my phone from under my pillow and see what time it is, see if I have any lovely messages from anyone, reply to all of those lovely messages and then open up facebook or twitter to see if the world exploded or imploded whilst I was asleep.

David Bowie had died of Cancer at the age of 69 and Facebook and Twitter was filled with feeds of the news, photos, his life, peoples sadness and his music! I was feeling a little ‘Ughhhh’ when I arrived that day and when I read the news, it didn’t help any and got me thinking about the whole Big ‘C’ a lot and how many lives have been taken lately from friends, family, the family of close friends, people in the public eye and also about people who are suffering and dying with the horrible and horrific disease right now in my life too. I have no idea what happens when our number is finally up and we slip out of this crazy world and I don’t think anyone will ever know and I feel that is part of the beauty and mystery of life. Hopefully it isn’t the ‘End’ but if it is, then I think I’d still be happy with that when my own time pops around the corner.

Although I wasn’t a massively huge fan of David Bowie, I loved a lot of his music and he was an astounding songwriter and musician. I loved his originality and how he brought that to his music and his personality. I used to perform some of his songs live and have spent lots of time learning them and listening to them throughout my own years. The response inside the online social world was amazing as it pretty much took over the whole internet and still is as I write this. Bowie left an amazing timeless legacy behind him and this will never be forgotten.

I pulled myself together, jumped up, grabbed a lovely coffee and thought about how lucky I am to have such an amazing life at the moment and great people around me who never fail to inspire me and support what I love and do. My family, friends ,loved ones, my two beautiful healthy babys, my own health, my freedom, a home and of course… ‘Music’ , without this and its many, many forms I think I would struggle to exist!

this morning at 2am, after reading different articles about Bowie online whilst I was listening to his music I decided to grab my pencil and sketch my own little tribute to Mr.Bowie for sharing his music and life and for being such an inspiration to millions of lives around our tiny little world and here it is!

What are you going to leave behind? What are you thankful for today? How and who can you inspire? How can you be a Hero today?  When is the next blog post coming from Shaggy? hahhaa… sorry I couldn’t resist!

Thanks for reading once again! We got there in the end didn’t we … phewww! I’d love to hear what your thoughts are in the comments below and maybe your own personal experience of Mr.Bowie if you have one. See you soon and keep the smiles alive!
