May you never (YouTube)

I have a new cover video up on my youtube channel this week! A cover of the amazing John Martyns ‘May you never’

I first heard a friend of mine performing this song at an open mic and buskers night I hosted with We Steal Flyers and the song stuck with me. I couldnt stop playing it as I was learning it. The rhythm and fingerstyle is so much fun to dabble with.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoy playing it!

I wanna be a man, man-cub!

This last week was a little bit of car crash! Actually a car break-down… I was on tour and in Leicester only two gigs into the We Steal Flyers tour when… the car had a major break down. The gearbox on Derek & Mel’s Vauxhall Zafira was making some funny noises and we were advised to get home with it a.s.a.p. When we got on the motorway the gears started dropping out one by one and we ended up driving for six and a half hours in fourth & third gear back to the North East.

We made it home safely after a few near misses on the motorway with a brush left in the hard shoulder and Optimus Prime coming up too fast behind us and nearly wiping us out. We made it back safe though and the car is being taken care of. Unfortunately the rest of the tour had to be cancelled or re-scheduled.

This meant I had a weekend free of work & gigs. This doesn’t happen very often and only one day into it I was starting to feel like there was going to be a lot of time on my hands. I managed to get lots done online and finished up some work for the new album which is currently off for print.Excitingggggg timesss!!!

Friday night & Saturday morning, we made a plan! Curly & I wanted to see the new Jungle Book movie and what better excuse to take the little half pints out to the cinema. The little ones were excited, we were excited ….everyone was excited! We booked our tickets online for the Vue cinema at Cramlington and grabbed the kids and off we went. We were making a little detour to Home Bargains to get some treats and drinks as the food and drinks are completely and utterly, ridiculously priced in the cinema. I’m pretty sure if they were a little more reasonable more people would just get fed and watered in the cinema.

Ready to head in for ‘The Jungle Book’ at Vue Cramlington

We picked up our tickets from the machines and headed into our ‘Room 1’ with a bag full of lovely chompies and liquids. The movie was ten times better than I imagined and we were all huddled up with Macey on my knee after the tiger roared and she nearly jumped off her seat. The songs were great and totally re-worked into the new movie. After the show the little ones headed down to the front of the cinema and they pretty much danced for twenty minutes in front of the screen while the place was emptying out.

The day before I had posted on the Facebook page of my studio ‘Shagnut Studio Shack‘ saying I had received some new video lighting to test out and Vee Marie replied saying I should interview the girls about something.

On the way back from the movie we talked about the girls doing a review of the movie for YouTube and they were well up for a little interview and fun in front of the camera. The idea was born and already in motion. We got back, got everything set up and the two little ones were on their chairs and ready for the show. They were absolutely brilliant! When they are both together the magic just happens and it was all done in just one take with no planning, so I had no idea what was gonna come out of them.

Things are all under control with the car and tours. We Steal Flyers will be back on the road in no time and with our brand new album ‘Applecart‘ in our hands too. It looks like a few more videos of the ‘Shortpiles’ will be popping up as well so if you would like something reviewed why not give them a shout on the YouTube video.

Thanks for reading!

If Tanglewood would… I would!

7th April 2016

I received some great news from Mark at Dennis Todd Music shop in Bedlington last week. Tanglewood Guitars were to be filming a new series of videos for their website and homepage. They were to drop in-store to film a local songwriter in a local Tanglewood dealer. The dealer was Dennis Todd’s in Bedlington,  my home town and I managed to be the lucky artist who was going to get to perform in the store.WoooHoooooo!!

Mark from Dennis Todd Music Store in Bedlington

Dennis Todd’s music shop has been around since I was a little wee wipper snapper. I used to stop off in the store growing up and gawk at all the lovely guitars and instruments in the shop. My father used to take me up there too as a little one when he was picking up strings and bits n pieces for guitars he was giving a new lease of life too. Mark Whiteman used to work in the store and has since taken over the shop from Dennis but kept the original name and local friendly shine it always had.

On Thursday , Elliot from Tanglewood was turning up at 11am and I had to get my butt down there to perform an original song and a cover version of a song using two different Tanglewood guitar models. He was going to be filming and recording the audio and putting it all together in a nice little package for the world to see on the Tanglewood homepage and YouTube.

I woke up not feeling too grand unfortunately and was all stuffed up with the first signs of this nasty cold coming along on Thursday morning but I managed to pull together and get down there to get started. Elliot was already setting up when I arrived and getting things ready so I had time to sneak a strong coffee in from Mark while we sorted things out in the shop. Mark had some lights brought down and sat one behind the corner of the seat in the corner and another smaller LED to give a little fill light.

Ready to start on the first take with Elliot

We were pretty much ready to go when the Curly one tipped up to sit in the corner in silence while we got cracking. We had a couple of large microphones set up in front of me and I had to give the songs a few takes though for each song to hopefully capture some different angles and cut scenes to be all synced up and hopefully look lurrrvely when its all done. By the time I got through the first take of the first song my backside felt like it was on fire from the lamp which was heating me up like an oven. Mark also realised there was an expensive Tanglewood sitting right in front of the light so that was moved quickly to another location in the shop. Peowwww!!

I got to use one of the new dreadnought sized Crossroad series Tanglewood for the first song which was an original song of mine called “English Tea” and will be available on the all new ‘We Steal Flyers‘ album ‘Applecart’ which is out on the 6th May 2016. For such an affordable guitar it sounded and performed really well and I started to get a little attached to it by the end of the takes.

The second song was a cover and I chose to play a version of the Cheers TV series theme song and I played a lovely TW40 OAN on this song. It had a a great big bright sound and was perfect for the more finger-style version of the song I was playing. By the time I got through the takes of the cover I was well and truly sweating with the muckle light behind me, that was trying to turn me into mush like the wicked witch of the North (East) . Ha Ha.

After the session with Mark & Elliot

After the session was done we managed to get packed up and had a little wander around a few places in Bedlington and got a few shots of the local points of interest. We popped into a few shops around the way and then back to the shop.

All in all it took around 4 hours and it was a great and different day with a few great people and hopefully the videos will arrive soon. With the amazing help of Mark from Dennis Todd’s and Elliot from Tanglewood UK the job was done and I managed to relax in the garden with a little fire with my little ones and Curly-top until way after dark. Another amazing adventure complete!!

Time to chill in the garden with the lovelys!

Thank you for stopping by my little humble home of life and music as always and look out for the new videos coming soon!

Shagpile – Outside In – Album Review

Well now!  I suppose a “Happy Anniversary” or sorts, is due to all involved today…

When we first started reviewing independent albums on the site, we were led to a tiny-two piece band way over in the UK called We Steal Flyers, and we reviewed their album Sidecars & Sideshows as we broke new ground of our own alongside this excellent duo.  And now after nearly a year has gone by, we get to experience another side of that band…errr…well, to be specific – one side of We Steal Flyers.  Jason Vare, aka “Shaggy” has come back to our site, in a new solo project called Shagpile with a debut album called Outside In – and we couldn’t be happier to have this gifted singer/songwriter find his way to our pages once again.

Now…I’d say that it’d be safe to tell fans of We Steal Flyers that they’ll certainly love what Jason has done here on Shagpile’s debut album.  The music is the beautifully toned and melodic mix you’ve come to know from him in WSF, but this album really goes the extra length in highlighting just what an important and integral part of the songwriting he is both in his band and in this new solo effort.  For fans of great storytelling in song, for those that like melody found in acts like Iron & Wine or David Gray – this new album, Outside In, is definitely made for you.

I’m a huge fan of genuine emotion in music – and I’m no dummy either.  Authenticity has been packaged and sold in the music industry for years and it can be tough to cut through all the bullshit we are served with daily.  I like it when music doesn’t sound forced.  I like music best…when it’s as REAL as this album is.

There is a fantastic quality in Vare’s voice that is completely addicting.  It’s not just the moments when his UK accent breaks through, no, it’s not that simple – this is a man that understands melody.  I think what I love most…that quality that I’m absolutely loving over here…are those tiny moments where he breaks slightly…or drifts away into the music.  Check out the Shagpile track “In The Morning” and you’ll get exactly what I mean.  On this track he attacks those vocals with powerful and trembling emotion…like…it almost sounds like these words meant so much to him that even recording them out loud nearly put him into tears.  Followed up by the isolated but hopeful-sounding “Smiles From The Dead,” I’m nearly in tears myself.  Vare should be incredibly proud of the beautiful recordings captured on Outside In, and the album itself should serve as a standard to the singer/songwriters out there; this is how you do it right.

Lyrically he’s writing from the inside-out to bring you from the Outside In.  Each track feels like he’s laying his soul’s-worth on the line; “You” and “Storytime” come along early in the album in real highlights.  Musically, this guy is always 100% spot on as well; a truly gifted and incredible acoustic-guitar player.  And it takes that kind of player to be able to make songs like “My Zombies” work!  I’m mean – this is acoustically driven music!  How in the hell did a zombie-reference get in here?  You’ll hear what I’m saying though – this track not only works, it’s a bloody-fantastic tune.

I’ll fully admit however, that when the tempo even picks up slightly…I’m almost waiting for him to drop it out and go slow again.  It’s not that tracks like “White Devil” or “My Zombies” will let you down – they won’t at all, and the album truly needs that diversity he’s planned into the flow to make the dynamics work as well as they truly do.  It’s just that Vare does SLOW so damn WELL!  Each example of him bringing it to a minimal place on tracks like “You” or “In The Morning,” show the real songwriter that exists inside him.  As the album closes on the epic “4am Lullacry” – it would take a lot to convince me otherwise…when this guy slows his music down, the world slows down with it…and it should.  It should stop completely…just for a moment, pause, think…and listen.

I’d go as far as saying you simply won’t find real emotions more genuinely recorded than you will on this album.  Vare has put his heart & soul into the songs on this Shagpile record, a common trait in all of the music he makes, which is something we now know ourselves.  Quiet, beautiful & acoustic doesn’t mean that music like this shouldn’t be out there making more noise all over the world, and it’s always my hope that truly fantastic songwriters like Jason Vare get recognized for their efforts by the masses one day.

There’s a really talented artist here, everything I’ve heard from his band to this solo effort has shown a commitment and dedication to beautiful songwriting beyond compare.  If he stays on this path and continues forward strong with this same dedication and heart in his music, no matter which project he chooses will have a massive chance of becoming known worldwide.  And each time the track “You” comes on…I get chills just realizing I could very well be listening to one of the most recognizable voices of our musical future to come.  Beautiful.  This album…is purely beautiful.
